A little about the tour:
On the way to Braemar, you will enjoy breathtaking scenery. A popular Highland resort, at 1100 feet above sea level, Braemar enjoys a scenic location. Queen Victoria favoured the village in her day and so do the royals today.
Braemar is probably best known for its Highland Games which are on the first Saturday in September called the annual Braemar Gathering. Braemar has a long history and the Braemar castle which is still standing was the second to be built in the village. The first was the Royal Kindrochit Castle, however only a small amount of ruins remain. The Braemar Castle you see today was built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar as a massive turreted fortress. It was burned down in 1689 and was garrisoned by government forces after the Jacobite risings in 1715 and 1745. The castle is open to visitors from May to mid-October, Saturday through Thursday, and there is plenty to see. Once inside the star-shaped castle is the stuff of fairytales.
The centre of Braemar is very pretty and it is here you will find a variety of shops and the Highland Heritage Centre. The centre is full of displays on Braemar’s royal connections and the Highland Gathering. Behind the Heritage Centre is Braemar Parish Church, with its distinctive spire: just one of four churches in the village, three of which are still active.
